How we started
Palmetto Wheels Exchange was born out of a deep understanding that too many of our neighbors in South Carolina were eligible for critical benefits but simply didn’t know they were available. In a small Charleston coffee shop, a group of local advocates gathered to discuss the challenges facing our communities, particularly those living in neighborhoods like North Charleston and the Lower Richland area. The conversation turned to the large number of individuals and families who were not enrolled in programs such as SNAP and WIC. Inspired by a common purpose, they realized that connecting these benefits with potential recipients could change lives.
As the idea evolved, it became clear that a sustainable funding model was needed. The solution? A vehicle donation program that allows South Carolinians to turn their unwanted cars into financial support for the benefits-research service. Through generous donations, we can ensure our community members receive the help they need to navigate resources like Healthy Connections and LIHEAP, fostering a more informed and healthier South Carolina.
