How South Carolina Donors Cancel Insurance After Car Donation

Cancel insurance only after pickup, title hand-off, and any required plate or registration step are fully complete first.

Cancel after the pickup and title hand-off are complete, not before. Until then, you may still legally own the car, so an early cancellation can leave you exposed to an uninsured loss. It can also create a lapse issue if the vehicle is still registered in a state that penalizes lapses.

If your DMV requires plate return, registration cancellation, or another step before insurance cancellation, do that first. Then ask your insurer to make the effective date the donation pickup/title-transfer date.

The right cancellation sequence

1

Confirm pickup and title hand-off

Do not cancel insurance while the car is still waiting for pickup. First, confirm that the vehicle has been picked up and that the signed title was handed off as part of the donation. If pickup is imminent, keep coverage in place until that hand-off is complete. This protects you if the vehicle is damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before transfer.

2

Handle plates or registration

Before calling your insurer, handle any plate or registration step your state requires. Some states require plate return or registration cancellation before insurance cancellation. Others require you to remove the plates and keep records. If you are unsure which rule applies to your donated vehicle, check with the South Carolina DMV before you cancel coverage.

3

Call with donation date

Call your insurance company after pickup, title hand-off, and any required DMV step are done. Give the insurer the donation date. Use the date the vehicle was picked up and the title was handed off as the requested effective date. Ask the representative to note that the vehicle was donated through Palmetto Wheels Exchange.

4

Remove or cancel coverage

If you have a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle from the policy. Keep your other vehicles covered. If this was your only insured vehicle, ask to cancel the auto policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you still drive any other vehicle, avoid any gap in coverage that could affect you personally.

5

Ask about premium refund

If you prepaid your premium, ask whether you are due a prorated refund. Refund rules depend on your policy terms and billing status, so do not assume the amount. Ask how the refund will be issued, where it will be sent, and whether any final bill or adjustment will follow after the cancellation or vehicle removal is processed.

6

Save written insurance confirmation

Ask for written confirmation showing the vehicle, the cancellation or removal date, and the policy change made. Save it with your pickup receipt, title copies if you kept any, registration or plate records, and donation paperwork. Also keep our Release of Liability Guide with your records so your file stays organized if a later question comes up.

What to have ready

Before you call the insurer, gather the policy number, vehicle year, make, model, VIN, pickup date, and the name Palmetto Wheels Exchange. Have your plate or registration record nearby if you completed a DMV step. If your policy covers more than one vehicle, identify exactly which vehicle was donated so the representative does not change the wrong coverage. Ask the insurer to send confirmation by email or mail, and save it in the same folder as your donation receipt.

Common questions

Can I cancel insurance if pickup is tomorrow?

No. Keep insurance active until the vehicle has been picked up and the signed title has been handed off. If the car is damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before pickup, cancelling early can leave you responsible for a problem on a vehicle you may still legally own.

What effective date should I give my insurer?

Use the pickup and title-transfer date. That is the clean date to give the insurer when you remove the vehicle or cancel the policy. If your carrier asks for paperwork, provide the pickup receipt or other donation record that shows when the vehicle left your possession.

Will I get money back after cancelling?

You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid for coverage beyond the cancellation date. The amount depends on your policy, billing cycle, and insurer rules. Ask directly whether a refund is due, how it will be paid, and whether any final adjustment will be issued.

What if this was my only car policy?

If the donated car was the only vehicle on the policy, you can cancel the policy after pickup, title hand-off, and any required DMV step. If you will be driving another vehicle, ask your insurer how to keep continuous coverage so you do not create a personal coverage gap.
